There is a lot of confusion in the vegan world about whether honey is vegan or not. Soon after I became vegan, I came across a nice online essay that discusses why honey is not vegan. If you call yourself vegan and consume honey, you should definitely read the essay. If you don’t call yourself vegan, than I recommend you still read the essay and find out why you should not eat honey. At the very least, it will give you an understanding of why vegans do not consume honey. Like dairy and meat, you can easily go without honey in your food.
Why Honey is Not Vegan

People already think vegans are insane for not eating meat or animal by-products. So this is already a hurdle you have to get over when talking to people about veganism.
When you start bringing bugs into the equation that’s just over the top. It decreases the chance of the person you’re talking to even trying vegetarianism by a ton and makes them just write you off as insane. Issues like honey will work themselves out when people decide to go vegan. Honey is definitely not an issue I push.
Hi Phil,
Thank you for your comment. I agree that bringing bugs into the equation when first introducing people to veganism can cause issues. Bugs are one area where conflict between humans and animals happens all the time and is harder to avoid. Honey consumption is easy to eliminate though.
I was targeting this post more to people who call themselves vegans, yet who consume honey. The essay talks about why honey is not considered vegan beyond the fact that not consuming honey was included in the original definition of veganism by Donald Watson in 1944. Many people have not thought about these issues before. I think getting people thinking about the issues is a good thing.
Keep on smiling
