NutritionData.com is a useful site for finding detailed nutritional analyses of common foods, including many raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. It is one of the most useful and user friendly sites that I’ve come across that presents this kind of information. According to the site, the database used is drawn from the USDA’s National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference and is supplemented by data provided by restaurants and food manufacturers.
A nutritional breakdown will typically include the following profiles:
- a calorie breakdown (calories from carbohydrate, fat, protein, and alcohol)
- protein & amino acids
- carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, fructose, etc.)
- vitamins
- fats and fatty acids
- minerals
- sterols
- and other (alcohol, water, ash, caffeine, theobromine)
(Don’t forget to click on the ‘more details’ buttons to see all the information in each profile.)
The site of course offers a lot of information on foods that are either not relevant (cooked plant foods) or that are ethically objectionable to raw vegans (foods containing animal products). That said, NutritionData.com is quite good. It is at least worth checking out if you are looking for more detailed nutritional profiles of some of the foods you eat.
